Anxiety is a common phenomenon of everyday life. The pressure of performing better and scoring high is increasing. Cases of suicides and extreme behaviors are also noted in present day scenario. In order to improve study habits, increase confidence, and reduce the academic anxiety levels of school going adolescents under ever-changing modern trends of society, a study on the variables of academic anxiety, and study habits and attitudes was conducted to know the impact of these on their achievement. The sample included 360 students from class ninth, both males and females, high and low achievers from the selected Government schools of Chandigarh located in urban, rural and slum areas. Academic Anxiety Scale for Children (AASC) by Singh and Sen Gupta (1984), and Test of Study Habits and Attitudes by Mathur (1983) were used. The findings of the present study revealed that overall academic anxiety among the high and the low achievers was average; no significant difference was found. The study habits of high achievers were satisfactory whereas poor study habits were found in low achievers. Further, low achievers scored higher in the corresponding areas which indicated that help is required. The males and females had average academic anxiety. No gender difference was found in academic anxiety; both reflected poor study habits (males were better in correct study habits; females reported higher in areas of help required. There was found average academic anxiety, and poor study habits in all the three locales. The slum area students reflected to be more in need of help in the areas related to study habits and attitudes.Keywords

Adolescence is a time of change where the young people are facing new experiences in the social set up they are in. The study was conducted with the objective to examine the adjustment problems in the domains of health, economic status, social, family self-perception, anxiety, religion, occupation, school and studies of eleventh and twelfth graders. It was hypothesized that: eleventh graders are more likely to face adjustment problems than twelfth graders; and that, science students will report more adjustment problems as compared to vocational stream students. Bronfrenbrenner's ecological model (Bronfenbrenner, 1979) provided the guiding framework for the study. The model provides insight into various factors that play a role in growth and development an individual. A total of 142 adolescents, 112 boys (n=112) and 30 girls (n=30) studying in eleventh and twelfth graders were included. The sample consisted of 61 students from eleventh graders and 81 students from twelfth graders from a particular Government school in Chandigarh from vocational (N=56) and science (N=86) streams. The sampling procedure was thus, purposive. The Student Problem Checklist (SPC) developed by The National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT, undated) was used the tool used. It comprised of 200 questions. The findings indicated the sample to be well adjusted in each of the areas. The adolescents from eleventh grader were found to be facing more problems as compared to the adolescents of twelfth graders, especially in the areas of economic status, social, family, self-perception, anxiety, religion, occupation, and studies. The adolescents from the vocational stream were found to be facing more problems in the areas of health, economic status and religion that those from the science stream. Need for assistance for guidance is thus reflected. Sufficient knowledge regarding career opportunities and remuneration can help them feel more secure and feel better adjustedKeywords

The present study was to investigate the happiness and inter parental acceptance and rejection among the boys and girls between the ages of 12-14 years. The current study investigated the interpersonal acceptance rejection and its sub dimensions (warmth/ affection, aggression/hostility, neglect/indifference, and rejection) gender wise, the impact of levels of interpersonal acceptance- rejection and its sub dimensions on happiness of the total sample. The findings revealed significant difference in interpersonal acceptance rejection and happiness in male and female students; the females showed better happiness and the males depicted less warmth, and more rejected feelings, than the females in the sample. Further, high happiness group was significantly higher as compared to low happiness group on parental warmth/affection. Low happiness group was significantly higher as compared to high happiness group on parental aggression/hostility, parental neglect/indifference, and parental rejection.Keywords

Adolescents exhibit peculiar developmental aspects, especially those living in peculiar and vulnerable circumstances owed by disturbances in family relationships. The objective of the study was to focus on six adolescent girls, three from urban well-to-do families, and the other three from the peripheral slum area in Chandigarh living in such families; three marginalized families with poor inter-parental relationship and two with similar poor relationships and one with absence (loss) of father . To understand the impact of such challenging dynamics of family including relationships dyads between parents, between siblings and parent child relationships were also observed. Four week observation was done in phase one, both at home and at the NGO set up in the cases of slum inhabitants. Phase two was conducted for two weeks again with one week space. Interviews were conducted with the significant others, usually mothers. Behavior observation was also a major tool employed. Cases belonging to the poverty stricken slum dwellings had issues like little to no education, meager parental supervision and exposure to erotic or unrestricted media that contributed to gullible dispositions. They were found resilient but had exposures to beetle eating, inhaling hookah; they were earning through menial domestic works. They disregarded alcoholic and indifferent fathers and seemed vulnerable to the drug and early sex practices among peers. Among the cases belonging to the affluent class, issues like family dynamics, exposure to media and falling prey to the wrong company of friends were the causes of vulnerability. They were found indifferent and repulsive to figures of authority including school and indulging in multiple relationships with the opposite sex. Early sexual experiments are of a concern in context of unprotected multiple sexual relationships and mental well being (guilt, rejection etc). The study indicates parenting challenges of the present adolescents and leaves a question on the worthiness of over engaged parents also.Keywords

In the last decade there has been an increasing interest in the level of stress, trauma, or violence experienced by humanitarian workers, but relatively little focus on the other side of the coin qualities that promote resilience and thriving in these challenging environments .The notion that family environment and school plays a buffering role in protecting child from brunt of life stress has powerful implications for course of action and healthy development. Case study approach was used on three adolescents from marginalized families of Chandigarh living in poor outer edge; each one had only one room for the entire family and the neighborhood was crowded with similar living units. Rapport building was done, interviews were held with the subjects and meeting at which information about subject was gathered by researchers from their parents and siblings. A meeting was arranged at which information about subject was gathered from his teachers and martial art instructor, which also included observations of subjects in regular class setup for two weeks. The conclusions drawn were that the at-risk factors identified as per perceived by the subjects were role models (fathers) indulging in alcohol and smoking, habit of stealing, aggression and violence. Mothers in all the three cases were greater source of comfort than fathers. Fathers' absenteeism for long hours at work was disliked. The observations of the researcher harmonized with the inputs from the teachers, neighborhood. Attending charity school acted as a major buffer; they could not afford it otherwise. A huge onus lied on the scope for improving home environment of such children and working on dynamics within the family.Keywords

Youth in Indian context exhibit and are more vocal to discuss prevalence of violence in marriage. It is important to know the marriage types, and causes, also seeking perceptions on individual, family and other factors of violence and compiling gender wise perceptions on violence and its correlates so as to sensitize youth on the need for preparedness for marriage (through pre marital counselling). A need based tool with questions out of ongoing researches was designed and got approved by scholars working in the area. The fact on violence prevalent in most cases with differences has a high corroboration. The sample included in the study was equal number of males and females between the age of 18 to 25 years (n=200; males-n=100, females-n=100). The findings reflected issues that lead to violence to be those such as ego blocks, in laws' interference parents of the both the spouses, misunderstandings on carelessness, possessiveness, differences in thoughts and viewpoints, dowry demands, trust issues, educational qualification, sexual dissatisfaction, stubborn and temperamental issues, uncompromising nature on small issues, irritable nature, substance indulgence, financial issues, restraining partner in social bonding, and so on. Majority admitted that all forms of violence are happening in society around us. Further, more girls agreed to need for premarital counselling; boys were not open about it. The study points out the sensitive issues that can be dealt with for a forthcoming matrimony among two individuals. These are typically youth around us as potential companions in marriage in the near future.Keywords

The marginalized population has many challenges. The dignity of each human being is very important to be protected. The state has laws, and rights and directives for implementation to protect, and for the welfare of all, further for the vulnerable and abused. The implementation of these get limited by unwilling obedience, ignorance, poor administration or misconduct. The limited role of support system including counselling services should be enhanced to care and include such population, especially children. The policy is taking care of the reforms needed but there is a need to let the counsellors step in more so that preventions come in more than corrections.Keywords

The study was done to investigate nutritional status of*pre-schoolers from low and lower middle income purposively selected groups. The nutritional status was examined on the basis of 24 hour dietary recall method, by the calculation of protein and energy according to the ages of children (3-5 years) with regard to their eating habits of children. Height and weight were assessed according to WHO growth charts and according to the socio-economic status of*children. Pilot study was done before the actual study. The sample (n=200,100 preschoolers- 50 from each agency, 100 respective mothers) was taken from selected Anganwadi (Al) and from dedicated laboratory nursery school under the human development department of Government Home Science College (A2), Chandigarh. A selfdesigned questionnaire for assessment of nutritional status was used. Making of the tool included inputs from authors and from paediatrician from PGIMER, Chandigarh working largely in research dedicated to relationship between nutrition and overall development. Developmental profile-3 test was used to investigate the developmental milestones of children. StimQ test was used to investigate the stimulation quotient of children. The findings were concerning keeping in mind the urbanized well developed city in all its aspects otherwise. The socio economic status of* families of children is low. Overall nutritional status of children was not up to the norms followed (WHO & RDAas per Nutritive & Dietetics, India). However A 2 children scored better than those from A1 .Caregivers and mothers of* 100 children were interviewed to collect necessary information regarding indicators of nutritional status of children. The findings suggested correlation between energy, protein, developmental milestones and stimulation quotient. It further indicates that good energy and protein also positively affect Stimulation Quotient and Developmental Milestones. In other words, good nutrition is important for better mental development. Clinical signs were more evident in A 1 children. Nutritional status of boys was better than that of girls. The state needs to intervene soon on nutritional care and provide dedicated awareness programs and also closely watched supplementary meal schemes.Keywords
